Puerto Maldonado located in the Madre de Dios region, this destination offers an unforgettable experience of nature, biodiversity and Amazonian culture. Known as the “Heart of the Amazon”, Puerto Maldonado is the starting point to explore the Tambopata National Reserve and the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, two protected areas that are home to an impressive diversity of flora and fauna. During your stay, you can enjoy activities such as jungle hikes, boat rides on Amazonian rivers, bird watching, meeting with indigenous communities and, if you are lucky, spotting iconic animals such as monkeys, jaguars and caimans.
Arrival at the airport or bus station and transfer to the office to check in for the final talk about our tour before departing for our adventure. In case you have large luggage, we suggest you repack to store unneeded items and bring enough for the trip.
Land transportation (4×4) to our destination for approx. 2 hours to reach the banks of the Tambopata River. In this place we will take a boat to the lodge “Monte Amazónico – Tambopata”. Welcome and breakfast or lunch depending on the time of arrival.
In the afternoon, we take an introductory walk into the rainforest where we will have the opportunity to see animals in their natural habitat such as amphibians, mammals, reptiles and insects, among others.
We get up very early, at 4:30 a.m., to undertake an incredible boat trip to the largest macaw clay lick in the world, “El chuncho”, a trip of approx. 1:30 hours by boat, on the way we will have the opportunity to see some species such as capybaras, which are the largest rodents in the world, you can even see the most beautiful feline in South America, the jaguar, many of our clients are witnesses with photographic evidence of encounters with these beautiful mammals.
After arriving at the macaw clay lick, you will see hundreds of parrots of different species come to eat clay by the river on the wall. This is a good day of activity, you will see hundreds of these wonderful animals flying above you.
Then we will walk through the botanical garden where you can see some fruits and medicinal species, accompanied by our guide. In the afternoon we will have the opportunity to practice kayaking and fishing in the Tambopata River, where we will move silently along the river, so we will have more opportunities to observe the larger animals of the Tambopata Reserve.
After breakfast, our boat takes us back to Puerto Maldonado and we transfer to the port where we take the boat for 1 hour until our lodge welcomes you with a refreshing fruit juice from our region.
After some time, you will have a first walk into the jungle to observe the wildlife and nature, guided by local expert guides who will take you through our trails and you will see some trees that can be more than 500 years old, so you can see some animals like toucans, orioles, macaws, monkeys, snakes, butterflies, etc.
After lunch, we will go to the monkey island, located in front of our lodge on the other side of the Madre de Dios River and look for the family of capuchin monkeys that live on this island, then we will return to the lodge.
At night we will go looking for white caimans, along the Madre de Dios river with flashlights and we will also be able to see capybaras, the largest rodent in the world weighing up to 60 kilos, we will spend the night in our comfortable lodging.
After breakfast, we walk for 3 km and head towards Sandoval Lake (habitat of the giant otter), and paddle a canoe and appreciate many types of monkeys (howler monkey, squirrel monkey, brown capuchin, tamarinds) and different species of birds (Hoatzin cormorants, jacanas, tiger herons, vultures) and sloth bears.
We may meet the family of giant otters (almost two meters long) that is in danger of extinction, we may see the largest caimans over 4 feet long recorded in the lake, finally we return to the lodge to enjoy a typical lunch and enjoy a spectacular sunset over the Madre de Dios River.
After breakfast we will walk the canopy trail that will allow us to see the rainforest from a different perspective, about 30m. high, the bridges will allow us to appreciate nature from a high altitude, we will have a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. From platforms you can observe different species of birds such as toucans, macaws, observe different species of birds such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, orioles and much more, this will be a wonderful experience.
After breakfast we get ready for an adrenaline filled activity in the trees over 30m. high. We will do the zip line, for this activity we will have an instructor guide, who will give a talk about how to use the safety harness during the zip line activity, feeling the rush of sliding through the trees. In the afternoon, the challenge is to cross the Madre de Dios River kayak, on the way we can appreciate the fascinating sunset. Then we can go fishing in the Madre de Dios River, with a little patience we will see some species of fish such as catfish.
