This hike to Rainbow Mountain will leave you with a memorable experience. On the second day of the hike you will observe a wonderful night among some of the bright stars, a colorful milky way and the constellations of the southern hemisphere, you will be amazed. This new trek will constantly enchant you. With a combination of incredible landscapes, snowy, rushing streams, challenging mountain passes, local shepherds, Andean geese, llamas, alpacas, chinchillas, condors and vicuñas, and of course you will have the opportunity to visit the Colored Mountain, where we will be the first to arrive at this place. so we can have all the majesty of this place just for us. everything seems untouched and undiscovered.
We depart early from Cusco traveling by private van to the small town of Tinque to begin our trek through the Rainbow Mountains of Peru. We will see the impressive Vilcanota mountain range and pass through several traditional Andean villages along the way and have time to take some pictures. When we arrive in Tinque, we will have a delicious breakfast prepared by our cook.
Then, our riders will organize all the group’s equipment and packs on the horses and our trek will begin, we will start our tour through the agricultural communities and enjoy the breathtaking views of the mountains. We will hike for about 3 hours and then we will have 1 hour to have lunch, after lunch we continue for 2 hours to reach Upis 4,100m / 13,448 ft. There we will have the opportunity to soak in the local hot springs before dinner and camp for the night.
After a great breakfast, we are ready to leave our camp and begin our hike, we will climb to Arapa Pass (4,850m. / 15,908 ft.). From this point we will enjoy the contrast between the dry desert like hills and the impressive snowy views of Ausangate and Pucacocha mountain, this area also has three beautiful lakes with shades of red, green and turquoise (Pucacocha, Hatun Pucacocha and Qomercocha) where we will have lunch, we will continue walking uphill and get the second pass called Pucacocha pass, then we will go downhill another 2 hours to our camp called Ananta. On the way we will appreciate different glacier peaks, rivers, small lakes, alpacas, local shepherds and llamas, of course, you will always be with your guide who will explain the area. We will spend the night in chillca.
Today, upon waking up you will have a cup of coca tea, then we quickly pack up and enjoy a quick breakfast and immediately start hiking up to Surini Pass, which is 5,051m. from where you enjoy colorful mountains all around you. Then we go downhill to the circular lake and then continue walking until we reach the Rainbow Mountain, where we will enjoy the amazing colorful mountains and surroundings. After lunch we pass through the Peruvian department until we reach our campsite called Ausangate Qocha where we have dinner.
Upon waking up you will have a cup of coca tea, we quickly pack up, enjoy a quick breakfast and immediately start hiking up to the highest point of the Ausangate trail (5,300m.) called Palomani pass. You will feel like you are in heaven, higher than all the other hikes in the entire Cusco region.
You will appreciate the great canyons and valleys of the Andes, but be aware that some condors might be flying nearby. You will be right at the foot of Ausangate Mountain, which the locals consider the protector, on the way we will appreciate different glacier peaks, bubbling streams, rivers, small lakes, chinchillas, alpacas, local shepherds and llamas. Then we will walk up and down, arriving at our campsite called Jampa.
Waking up early at 5:30 a.m. with a coca tea that will be brought to your tent. Then we quickly pack up, enjoy a quick breakfast and immediately start walking uphill for approx. 3 hours to reach the last pass at 4,900m. From here we can appreciate some peaks, lakes and glaciers, then we descend to our lunch spot called Pacchanta where our cook and porters will make our last dinner.
There are some nice natural hot springs here in the middle of the mountain, so after 4 days of hiking you will love to bathe in the hot springs and enjoy a beer and you will have the opportunity to buy some handmade crafts from the local people. After saying goodbye to our horseman and cook, we will take our private van and return for 3 hours to Cusco.
