Puerto Maldonado located in the Madre de Dios region, this destination offers an unforgettable experience of nature, biodiversity and Amazonian culture. Known as the “Heart of the Amazon”, Puerto Maldonado is the starting point to explore the Tambopata National Reserve and the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, two protected areas that are home to an impressive diversity of flora and fauna. During your stay, you can enjoy activities such as jungle hikes, boat rides on Amazonian rivers, bird watching, meeting with indigenous communities and, if you are lucky, spotting iconic animals such as monkeys, jaguars and caimans.
We will be transported to the Madre de Dios river port, where our boat will take us upstream for a 1 hour trip to (Monte Amazon Lodge). A great welcome with a delicious typical fruit juice will be waiting for you upon arrival at the lodge after we are going to show you the facilities of our bungalows.
After some time, you will have a first walk into the jungle to observe the wildlife and nature, guided by expert and experienced local guides who will take you through our trails and you will be able to see some trees that can be more than 500 years old.
After lunch, we will go to the monkey island, located in front of our lodge on the other side of the Madre de Dios River and look for the family of capuchin monkeys that live on this island, then we will return to the lodge.
At night we will go to look for white caimans, along the Madre de Dios river with flashlights and we will also see the capybaras, the largest rodent in the world weighing up to 60 kilos, we will spend the night in our comfortable lodge.
After breakfast, we walk for 3 km and head towards Sandoval Lake (habitat of the giant otter), and paddle in canoe and appreciate many types of monkeys (howler monkey, squirrel monkey, brown capuchin, tamarinds) and different species of birds (Hoatzin cormorants, jacanas, tiger herons, vultures) and sloths. We may meet the family of giant otters (almost two meters long) which is in danger of extinction, we may see the largest caimans over 4 feet long recorded in the lake, finally we return to the lodge to enjoy a typical lunch and enjoy a spectacular sunset over the Madre de Dios River.
At 5:30 am in the morning, we take a short walk through the canopy trail, approximately 40m. high, which allows us to have a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River and allows us to observe different species of birds, such as toucans, trogons, macaws, tanagers, orioles, etc.
Then we prepare for a challenging activity in trees over 30m. high, for this activity we will have an instructor guide who will give us a talk on how to use the safety harness for the zip line, feel the adrenaline in the trees, return to the lodge.
After breakfast, we will return to the city and then we will return in our 4×4 for lunch, after a break, we will walk to visit the clay lick, finally we will have dinner and rest.
Early in the morning we go to the macaw clay lick here we will see a great spectacle of noisy parrots and macaws. they come to lick to find minerals and salts with digestive properties in the clay wall, macaws and parrots like the dark blue head, chirricles, maracan, blue and yellow macaw, red and green macaw and red macaw. On our way back to our lodge we can see caimans, turtles and capybaras, jaguar, tapir along the Tambopata River, lunch at the lodge and rest.
In the afternoon we fish for piranhas and other species of fish in the Tambopata River, night walk, where you can see a variety of insects (tarantulas, toads and frogs), dinner and rest.
