The Salkantay to Machu Picchu tour is an exciting trekking adventure that takes travelers through some of the most breathtaking landscapes of the Peruvian Andes. During this tour, travelers trek through impressive mountains, pass through beautiful green valleys, cross crystal clear rivers and experience the local culture. The highlight of this trek is reaching Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
Travelers will have the opportunity to explore the ancient ruins and learn about the history and culture of the Inca people. In addition, on the way to Machu Picchu, travelers will have the opportunity to interact with the local inhabitants and learn about their customs and traditions.
We will pick you up at 10 am from your hotel, where you will meet your Bioandean Expeditions trekking team. From here, we will head out in our private transportation for a 3-hour drive to the camp at Soraypampa, located at 3,800 meters above sea level. We will arrive just in time to have lunch in our luxury Domes.
At the camp, your guide will show you the facilities of our luxurious Dome, so after lunch we will walk for 3 hours (round trip) to visit the Blue Lagoon of Humantay, spend the night in our exclusive Luxury Domes, have dinner together with some hot drinks. Your night will be accompanied by the countless stars that adorn the night sky and we make a bonfire to enjoy the stars.
After a good night’s rest, we wake up early to enjoy a delicious breakfast before the hike. During this morning, there will be a brief team presentation among all hikers and Bioandean staff to ensure a positive and familiar experience. After the presentation, you will hand your duffel bags to the muleteers to carry.
This will be a hike of approx. 3 hours along a steady ascent to the Salkantay Pass at 4,650 m.a.s.l. the highest point of the trek. Once here, you will be rewarded with hot drinks before continuing! From the Salkantay pass, it will be only 1 hour more to our lunch point at Wayracmachay. After lunch, we will hike for only 2 more hours through the cloud forest to Chaullay, where we will take a 1 hour transport to our exclusive Domos camp at Playa Sahuayaco.
We will have an early breakfast, so after breakfast we will have the coffee experience, we will be able to see the coffee process, (harvesting, roasting, grinding), then we will get ready for our adrenaline filled zip line activity, then we will cycle for approx. 3 hours to the natural hot springs of Santa Teresa, where we will enjoy the natural hot springs for approx. 2 hours, finally we will be transported to our camp where we will have dinner and enjoy a nice campfire.
After a hearty breakfast, we head uphill for 2-3 hours to Llactapata (2700 m / 8900 ft), where we encounter a distant but very special view of Machu Picchu from the southwest, a view that few tourists get to see, an added value are the Quechua site Llactapata, which have been recently restored, we will have a great view of Machu Picchu.
We then begin our final descent to the Aobamba River through lush forests, orchards and coffee plantations (2-3 hours of descent). Then, after lunch, we will hike for 2.5 hours from Hydroelectric to Aguas Calientes and spend the night in the town of Aguas Calientes at our 4-star hotel ****.
We get up early in the morning around 4 am. to have breakfast and leave for Machu Picchu which takes 1:30 minutes walking, but there is another option to take the first bus that leaves at 5:30 am. to Machu Picchu (takes 25 minutes) to appreciate the magnificent city as the sun rises.
Your guide will give you a 2-hour tour and then you can explore the mysterious city on your own. If you still have energy, you can also climb Huayna Picchu (2,720m. / 8,890 ft.) It takes 1:45 minutes to reach the top (optional and check availability). Then you will take the train around 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm or 6:20 pm depending on the availability of the train, so you will arrive to Ollantaytambo after 2 hours of travel, so a private transportation will take you back to Cusco.
